Children's Discovery Museum

The mission of the Children’s Discovery Museum is to inspire the love of learning through the power of play. Our mission is accomplished through hands-on exhibits, classes, and programs that engage visitors in experiences that stimulate imagination, curiosity, and wonder.

Throughout its history the CDM has operated under a variety of names at different locations in the Bloomington-Normal area but has always remained true to its focus. The organization was first founded as an independent, private institution in 1988 as the McLean County Children’s Discovery Museum, opening its doors to the public and showcasing hands-on exhibits in 1994. In 2002, the Town of Normal announced a formal partnership with the CDM and a commitment to construct a new museum. In November 2004, the CDM welcomed its first visitors in its new three-story, 34,000 sq. ft. LEED certified building filled with a number of hands-on, interactive exhibit galleries. Since then, the museum has hosted over 1.7 million visitors.

The Children’s Discovery Museum’s three floors of hands-on exhibit galleries offer unique opportunities for visitors. Each exhibit addresses various 21st Century learning avenues such as collaboration, communication, confidence, critical thinking, creativity, and content, and are developmentally-appropriate for a variety of age ranges. Traditional exhibit experiences are expanded upon, interpreted and supplemented by CDM Educational programs. Tackling subjects from fields as diverse as archeology and oceanography, aerodynamics and nanotechnology, and engineering and puppetry, CDM Educators provide a wide variety of educational classes, events and camps for youth ages 3 months to 13 years old.
